Most areas below are not bills yet, but areas of interest affecting our community that we would like to see changed with bills.

  1. Repeal Driver’s License Suspension for non-payment of fees & fines (SB181)

My name is (Insert your name) and I am a constituent from (Insert your city/address).

I would like you to include in the Fairfax County 2019 Legislative Program bills that repeal Driver’s License suspension for non-payment of fees & fines. Specifically, like SB181, which is in the 2019 House Committee (Insert personal connection or story on how this has impacted you: i.e. I am a family member of a loved one rebuilding their life, I am rebuilding my life, I want a strong community, etc.).

This would allow convicted persons to keep their drivers licenses as they are working to pay their fines and court costs. Suspending a driver’s license merely because a person can’t immediately pay all court costs hurts the person’s job opportunities.  Passage of this bill will help these individuals be productive members of our community, which helps keep our communities safe.

Thank you for your time and consideration, (Insert your name)

  2. Provide incentives for employers to hire the formerly incarcerated.

My name is (Insert your name) and I am a constituent from (Insert your city/address). I would like you to include in the Fairfax County 2019 Legislative Program bills that provide incentives for employers to hire the formerly incarcerated. Including a tax credit for businesses to employ a person with a record of a felony or immunity for employers of non-violent felons, as proposed in the 2018 session HB65 & HB70 (Insert personal connection or story on how this has impacted you: i.e. I am a family member of a loved one rebuilding their life, I am rebuilding my life, I want a strong community, etc.).

This will provide more opportunities for convicted persons to work and become successful, productive members of our community.

Thank you for your time and consideration, (Insert your name)

  3. Increase the Felony Threshold to $1,000

My name is (Insert your name) and I am a constituent from (Insert your city).

I would like you to include in the Fairfax County 2019 Legislative Program bills that will increase the felony threshold to $1,000. (Insert personal connection or story on how this has impacted you: i.e. I am a family member of a loved one rebuilding their life, I am rebuilding my life, I want a strong community, etc.).

Currently, it is considered a felony if a person steals $500. This bill would increase the amount of money or goods taken to $1,000 to be considered a felony. Larceny of lesser amounts would still be a misdemeanor. Passage of this bill would align punishments with the prices & rates of 2018, and help avoid the inappropriately severe incarceration of Virginians, which brings associated costs.

Thank you for your time and consideration, (Insert your name)
