OAR Hosts Important Community Conversation

When we think about our criminal justice system, we generally think of police making an arrest, judges slamming their gavel, and jail sentences being levied. However, there is much more to this complex and nuanced process. On Thursday, May 6th 2021, OAR hosted the virtual community discussion “Restoring More Than Justice” to discuss that nuance. A panel moderated by Rand Corporation’s Melissa Labriola, included Fairfax Commonwealth Attorney Descano, Loudoun Commonwealth Attorney Biberaj, Fairfax General District Court Judge Lindner, who spoke on their professional experience with alternative sentencing and diversion programs. During the discussion, participants were able to submit questions to these officials to help clarify points and bring up potential challenges. The evening was insightful, giving participants a chance to hear what progress could look like if more alternative sentencing and diversion programs were put into place within our counties. OAR Nova thanks Judge Linder, Commonwealth Attorneys Biberaj and Descano, as well as Melissa Labriola for their participation in this important conversation! Check out our video below on alternative sentencing to learn how it’s beneficial to our community.
